USA Cycling is the governing body that oversees all bike racing
in the US. They sponsor regional camps each year for the development of junior riders. If you click on the LAJORS link, it will take you to their website where you'll find information about the camps, a calendar of races where your junior can qualify and more.

The Dent Wizard team has had several juniors attend Regional camp and they all found it to be a very beneficial experience.

Welcome to the FAQ page

This page was created for those of you who are new to bike racing. If you have a question that is not answered here, e-mail us. We will research the topic and update this page.

We aren't experts, just parents like you who have learned a little along the way. The Dent Wizard elite team members are a great source of information and we can pick their brains too. One way or another, we'll keep this page filled with useful tips and information. And, sometimes a little humor.

Junior Gear Restrictions

In a Juniors' race, if the race flyer states that junior gear restrictions will be enforced, you must have a bike that has a junior cassette configuration [45x12 or 52x14] or block gears to achieve the same result.

To test if your bike is in compliance, an official will use the roll-out method. You will place your gears in the large chain ring (front) and smallest cog (back). On a line measuring exactly 26 feet, the chain crank arm will be placed perpendicular to the ground, the front wheel is lifted off the ground, and the bike is walked backwards. The crank should make one revolution within the 26 feet.

Often officials do a courtesy roll-out prior to the race. This will enable a rider to block gears if they fail the roll-out. However, immediately after crossing the finish line, all juniors must report for a mandatory roll-out. The penalty for failing a mandatory roll-out is disqualification.

COACHING by Dave Wenger

Dave Wenger comes highly recommended by two of our Dent Wizard elite teammates. Also, some of our junior team members are currently training with Dave in preparation for Junior Nationals in July.

We recommend him to those of you who are thinking of professional coaching for your junior.
